January 10*16,1985 Vancoboro, North Carolina Phono 244-0780 12 Pagos 20 Conta West Craven Middle School Gymnast Teams The West Craven Gymnasts wrapped up this season with the annuai gymnastic show at West Craven Middle School on December 1, 1984. Parents, relatives, and friends of the gymnasts enjoyed an evening with Mr. and Mrs. Claus, Rudolph, Raggedy Ann and Andy, Jack-in-the-box, and other toys in Santa’s Toy and Fitness Center. The gymnasts performed routines on the uneven bars and balance beam and also demonstrated skills in tumbling and vaulting. Thanks to the gymnasts and many volunteers, the show was a big success. Taxes Paid By CT&T Reflect Large Investment Carolina Telephone’s 1984 Vanceboro property tax payment here amounted to $5,527.11. W.C. Thomas, Carolina Telephone’s district com mercial manager in New Bern, said that the company’s total tax payment within Craven unty, including all town and y taxes, is $415,129.50. County and municipal taxes paid by the company in its 50- county operating area totaled $7 million. “The taxes reflect Carolina Telephone’s extensive investment in facilities and equipment to provide telephone service to more than 615,000 customers in eastern North Carolina,’’ said Thomas. Carolina Telephone’s total tax bill for 1984, including all state and federal taxes, is expected to come to approxi mately $83 million. This figure does not include more than $10 million in three percent federal excise tax payments that were billed to telephone users by the company. "Carolina Telephone has more than $1 billion invested in our service area to provide modern, reliable telephone service to our customers,’’ Thomas said. "Each year we must invest millions of dollars in new equipment and facilities to keep pace with rapidly changing technology and to meet the communications needs of growing eastern North Carolina.” “In recent years, our construction programs have been costing us in excess of $90 million dollars annually.Of this $90 million spent each year, about half goes to maintain and replace existing equipment. The remaining dollars are being used to modernize, upgrade, and in some cases, expand our facilities.” Craven County Hospital Opens Convenience Clinic Craven County Hospital now has a weekend convenience clinic. It opened last weekend and treated up to twelve people. The clinic is set up in Radiation Therapy Depart ment and is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The basic fee for a visit is $20. This is a move to free the Emergency Roorn of non-emergency patients. Ipocks To Attend First Rotary Youth Leadership Conference Cannons Return From Buying Trip m Mr. and Mrs. Richard l^annon of Cannon’s Variety ore in Vanceboro have returned from a buying trip in Lancaster, Penn. The mer chandise show was sponsored by York Distributing Company, an affiliate of the McCrory Store Chain. 383 stores had over 700 representatives at the show. Including buyers, vendors and customers there were over 1100 people participating in the show. The show was held at Host Farm Hotel in Lancaster, Penn. Dana A Diane Ipock Dana and Diane Ipock, daughters of James and Brenda Ipock of Vanceboro have been selected by the Vanceboro Rotary Club to attend the first Rotary Youth Leadership Conference to be held at the Ramada Inn in Ahoskie, N.C. on March 1, 2, and 3, 1985. These young ladies were chosen based on academic achievement in Marketing and Distributive Education and demonstration of leadership capability.
